What Is Afternoon Tea?

Afternoon Tea is a British tradition that dates back to the 1840s. It’s a small meal that was designed to curb hunger before dinner was served at 8pm. In those days, it was standard to only have two meals a day – breakfast and dinner. Therefore, this was a solution to many who found themselves hungry between meals.

The original Afternoon Tea consisted of a light snack served alongside a pot of tea. As the tradition became widespread, more people were invited. This was initially popular among groups of women before it became fashionable for everyone to indulge in a light afternoon meal together.

Nowadays, you might also know this meal as ‘high tea’ or ‘low tea’, and it could be served at any time in the afternoon. Although in the past, this light meal was a staple meal for many, it’s now considered to be a treat or special occasion.

What’s On The Traditional Afternoon Tea Menu?

A proper Afternoon Tea will include a selection of finger sandwiches. Finger sandwiches are just like regular sandwiches. However, the crusts are cut off and they are sliced into small, bitesize portions. These usually contain traditional British ingredients, like egg and cress or smoked salmon.

You should also have fresh scones, preferably served warm, with jam and clotted cream. More sweet treats may be served alongside the scones. You could expect to see home-made cakes, pastries and biscuits.

Of course, we couldn’t tell you about the contents of an Afternoon Tea without including its namesake. A pot of tea is an absolute essential!
